Year 7 Transition

The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone in a young person's educational journey. At Ernest Bevin Academy, we have developed a comprehensive transition program to ensure that all new Year 7 students and their families feel welcomed, prepared, and excited about joining our school community.
Our transition process begins well before students start in September and continues throughout their first year at Ernest Bevin Academy. We work closely with primary schools, parents, and the students themselves to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

Support During Transition
Year 7 Team
Our dedicated Year 7 team includes the Year Leader, Assistant Year Leader, and form tutors who specialize in supporting students through this transition period. They are the first point of contact for any concerns and provide personalized support to each student.
Buddy System
Each new Year 7 student is paired with a Year 8 buddy who has recently experienced the transition process. These buddies provide peer support, help with finding classrooms, and share their insights about school life.
Pastoral Support
Our pastoral team provides additional support for students who may be finding the transition challenging. This includes access to mentoring, counseling services, and specialized support for students with special educational needs.
Parent Partnership
We believe that strong home-school partnerships are essential for a successful transition. Parents are kept informed through regular communications, a dedicated Year 7 parent information evening in September, and early parent-teacher consultations in the autumn term.

How are form groups organized?
Students are placed in mixed-ability form groups, taking into account information from primary schools. We try to ensure that each student knows at least one other person in their form group, while also encouraging new friendships.
What if my child gets lost?
During the first few weeks, additional staff and prefects are on duty to help direct new students. All classrooms are clearly labeled, and students are given maps of the school. Staff understand that it takes time for students to learn their way around.
How is homework managed?
In Year 7, homework is gradually introduced to help students develop good study habits. All homework is set through our online platform, which parents can also access to monitor assignments and deadlines.
What extracurricular activities are available?
We offer a wide range of clubs and activities, including sports, music, drama, science, technology, and more. Year 7 students are encouraged to join at least one club to broaden their experiences and make friends with similar interests.
