In-year Admissions & Transfers

Students in classroom at Ernest Bevin Academy

In-year admissions refer to applications made outside the normal admissions round for Year 7. This includes students who move into the area or wish to transfer from another school during the academic year.

At Ernest Bevin Academy, we welcome applications throughout the year, subject to place availability. Our dedicated admissions team will guide you through every step of the process.

How to Apply for an In-Year Place

The In-Year Application Process

  1. Check availability

Contact our Admissions Officer to check if we have places available in the relevant year group. You can do this by phone or email.

  2. Complete the application form

Download and complete the In-Year Application Form from our website or request a copy from the school office.

  3. Provide supporting documents

Submit the completed form along with supporting documents, including proof of address, your child's birth certificate, and their most recent school report.

  4. School visit and meeting

If a place is available, you and your child will be invited to visit the school and meet with a member of our senior leadership team.

  5. Decision and start date

You will receive a decision on your application within 10 school days. If accepted, we will agree on a start date and create a transition plan for your child.

Please complete all sections of the form and return it to the school with the required supporting documents.

Waiting Lists

If we do not have a place available in your child's year group, we can add your child to our waiting list. Waiting lists are maintained for all year groups and are ordered according to our admissions criteria, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

When a place becomes available, we will contact the family at the top of the waiting list. The waiting list is maintained until the end of the academic year, after which you will need to reapply if you wish your child to remain on the list.

Key Points About Waiting Lists

  • Your child's position on the waiting list may change as other applications are added or removed
  • Being on a waiting list does not guarantee that a place will become available
  • We will contact you if a place becomes available for your child
  • You can check your child's position on the waiting list by contacting our Admissions Officer

Fair Access Protocol

Ernest Bevin Academy participates in the Local Authority's Fair Access Protocol. This ensures that children who are vulnerable or hard to place are allocated a school place as quickly as possible.

Children admitted under the Fair Access Protocol may be given priority over children on the waiting list and, in some cases, may be admitted even when the year group is full. For more information about the Fair Access Protocol, please contact the Local Authority or our Admissions Officer.

Considering a School Transfer

Changing schools is a significant decision that can impact your child's education. We recommend considering the following factors before applying for a transfer:

If You Are Moving House

If your family is relocating to the area, a school transfer makes sense. Please provide proof of your new address with your application.

Curriculum Considerations

Different schools may follow different curricula or exam boards. A transfer may impact course continuity, especially in Years 10 and 11.

Social Adjustment

Consider how your child will adjust to a new social environment. Our pastoral team will support their integration, but it's an important factor to consider.

Issues at Current School

If there are issues at your child's current school, we encourage you to try resolving them directly with the school before considering a transfer.

We're happy to discuss your individual circumstances and answer any questions you may have about transferring to Ernest Bevin Academy. Please contact our Admissions Officer to arrange a phone call or meeting.

Transition Support

We understand that changing schools can be challenging for students. At Ernest Bevin Academy, we have a comprehensive transition program to help new students settle in quickly and feel part of our community.

Buddy System

New students are paired with a buddy who will help them navigate the school and make friends.

Academic Assessment

We assess new students to ensure they're placed in appropriate teaching groups for their abilities.

Pastoral Support

Our Year Leaders and form tutors provide ongoing support to help students adjust to their new environment.

We also maintain close communication with parents during the transition period and welcome feedback on how your child is settling in.
